Students’ Six is a professional development program to improve instruction for students of color by identifying and promoting the use of research-based and student-validated teaching strategies. In this presentation, Jotham shares some experiences he’s had with his teachers, as well as his involvement with the Students’ Six. He talks about his civics teacher and the safe and active learning environment he created for his students. Jotham reflects on a negative classroom experience where the teacher had only two rules: one; what he said was right, and two; he was never wrong. Building positive student-teacher relationships and using the Students’ Six Strategies help create a safe and active learning environment. The Students’ Six Strategies are visibility, proximity, connection to students’ lives, engaging students’ cultures, addressing race, and connecting to students’ future selves.
