What’s New in Edivate

August 10, 2017

  • NEW! Digital Signatures for Completed Observations – We are pleased to announce support for the much-requested digital signatures for Observe observations. Requesting digital signatures is a two-step process:
    • Enable Digital Signatures on the Template.
      This allows an observer to choose whether or not to require a digital signature for the completed observation.
    • When completing the observation, mark the ‘Request Digital Signature’ option.
      The observer is then asked to digitally sign the observation, and the observee have the ability to digitally sign the observation..

    As an observer, you can easily see the status of digital signatures (green quill = signed; red quill = needs signature) from the Observations list in Observe and in the Assignment Status Report in Observe.

    As an observee, you can see observations that require a digital signature in the Observations list in Edivate and in the Observation Assignments list in Edivate.
    Digital signatures appear on exported observations, on the Signature lines.

  • NEW! Digital Signatures for Completed Observations – You can now assign Micro-Credentials as PD within Observe. Since completing an MC involves intentional and rigorous collection of evidence, rather than mandated learning tasks, the observer can truly drive the desired outcome without micro-managing the individual learning resources.
  • NEW! Explicit Support Access – There is a new Support page that makes it easier for customers to quickly locate all Support-related items in one place. This page is accessed via the User menu in the menu bar.Beginning with this release, users that want or need School Improvement Support personnel to use their account on their behalf must explicitly grant permission via the Support Access on the new Support page.
  • NEW! LumiBook End of Life – With the introduction of LumiBook in 2012, School Improvement Network was excited to be a pioneer in e-publishing. However, the underlying technology for LumiBook is no longer easily deployable, and as a result, School Improvement Network will no longer be providing online access to LumiBook. As part of our ongoing efforts to support educators, we will continue to focus our development resources on Edivate Growth System functionality.For questions regarding LumiBook access, contact lumibooksupport@edivate.com.
  • NEW! File Description on Assigned PD – In a previous release of Edivate, we provided functionality to capture a file description when attaching a file as PD in Observe. The file description is now available when viewing the list of Observation Assignments, giving context to the learner as to the purpose of the file.
  • UPDATED: Micro-Credential User Interface Changes – The previous Micro-Credential user interface inadvertently gave the impression that the only way or preferred way of earning an MC was by completing the learning resources. To reduce this confusion, we have removed the progress bar from the initial MC page (the page containing the learning resources). In making this change, we have also updated the various locations where MC status was displayed to switch from a percentage complete indication to a more succinct ‘Not Started | In Progress | Complete” status. (An MC is ‘In Progress’ if at least one learning resource – one ‘bit’ – has been fully completed, or at least one piece of evidence has been submitted for assessment.)
  • UPDATED: Self, Peer as Observation Types – New Observe templates now include Self and Peer tags as part of the predefined Type Category. With this change, we are now able to automatically select the ‘Self’ tag when performing a self-assessment.
  • NEW! Classroom Procedures and Routines Micro-Credential – The Classroom Procedures and Routines Micro-Credential helps educators enhance their productivity and positivity of their classroom environment by upgrading procedures and routines.

Known Issues

  • Clicking on earned, deprecated Micro-Credentials from either the Learning Targets list or the Profile page will re-direct the user to the Edivate Home Page, rather than to the Micro-Credential main page.
  • With the launch of iOS 10 in September 2016, Apple officially stopped supporting iPad versions 2 and 3. While have supported this hardware option for the Observe iOS app for the past school year, we will no longer officially support this older hardware as of this release.Also of note, we anticipate that with the upcoming release of iOS 11 in September 2017, the Observe iOS app will no longer be accessible to these older devices for download from the App Store.

UPDATED: Observe Reports Filtering Enhancements – Several changes have been made to the way Observe Reports are filtered for searching:

  • New layout for all reports provides a more consistent, logical search experience.
  • Ability to select the date range filter type. You can now limit your searches by either the start date, the end date, or the date the observation was marked as Complete.
  • Redesign of the filtering architecture results in faster, more reliable reporting experience.

NEW! Individual Observation Details on Results by Item Report – Added the ability for the person who generates the Results by Item Report to drill down into the aggregate values to see the individual observations that contributed to the data. This replicates functionality found in Observation 360, and provides the ability for more fine-grained data analysis.

NEW! Include Feedback on Printed Observations – Feedback can optionally be included when printing an individual Observation or when the Observations by Template report is generated. This allows a complete record of communication around the observation to be captured in printed reports.

UPDATED: Hide Rubric Descriptions on Observe Results by Item Report – Rubric Descriptions can now be hidden when generating the Results by Item Report, resulting in shorter printed reports.

UPDATED: Important Observation Details on First Page of Printed Observations – Based on user requests for smaller printed Observations and Observations by Template Reports, we’ve moved key information about the Observation to the front of the report, and have provided the ability to optionally include or exclude the rest of the observation data. Key information moved to the front of the report includes Observation and Section Scoring (if included) and Signatures Lines.

NEW! Access All Observe Assigned PD in One Location – The new Observations Assignments page in Learning Targets provides a convenient one-stop-shop for accessing all PD assignments issued from any Observe observation. There is also a new associated My Assignments Dashboard card that shows assigned PD with upcoming due dates.

NEW! View Personal Micro-Credential Details from Profile Page – The My Profile page has a new section, called ‘My Micro-Credentials,’ that shows all Completed and In-Progress Micro-Credentials. This allows users to easily keep track of any MCs they have earned, or any that they are currently working on.

UPDATED: Ability to View Micro-Credential Evidence Requirements Without Assigned District Assessor – Users can now view the Evidence Requirements for a Micro-Credential regardless of whether or not their District has assigned and assessor. This allows district personnel the ability to review all MC details before deciding if they want to incorporate the MC into their professional learning plans.

NEW! LTI Provider Support – Select Edivate resources are now accessible to our customers through third-party applications that support the LTI interoperability standard. Please contact Support for assistance in configuring these requests.

Content Updates

NEW! Project-Based Learning Level 2 Micro-Credential – After the basic elements of PBL are already present in your practice, PBL Level 2 shows how projects become more impactful when they are expanded to include a challenging problem or question, authenticity, critique, and revision.

NEW! Observe Results by Item Report – Compiles indicator data from completed observations across a District, School, or Educator for a specific observation template. Unlike the Proficiency Trend Report, the Results by Item Report does not require scoring.

UPDATED: Observe Data Export Report – Exports all observation data for a specific template revision in a format suitable for additional analysis or consumption outside of Edivate.

NEW! Support for Template Revisions on Reports – The Results by Item and the Data Export Reports now require that a Template Revision be selected prior to generating a report. This feature will be added to other Observe reports in upcoming releases.

UPDATED: Observe Proficiency Trend Report – Updated to Proficiency Trend Report – Individual. This report now requires an Invitee, and cannot be used across multiple locations.

AVAILABLE: District-Level Micro-Credential Assessment – Accounts can now assess Micro-Credentials within their own Districts. Accounts that want to enable this functionality must call Support and provide the names of the Micro-Credentials they want to assess, and the usernames of the assessors for each Micro-Credential.

UPDATED: Evidence Requirements for All Premium Content Micro-Credentials – All Premium Content Micro-Credentials now have Evidence requirements, including the six that previously did not:

NEW! In Review Status for Observations – Allows an observation to be shared to additional reviewers before being finalized. While an observation is in the In Review status, reviewers can provide feedback to the observer, and the observer can make additional changes and updates to the observation, including attaching additional evidence and prescribing additional PD items prior to completing and finalizing the observation.

NEW! Hide Scoring on Observations – Hides scoring while performing observations and optionally on printed reports. This allows template creators to still include scoring on indicators for the purpose of calculating summative section- and observation-level rubrics (necessary for the Proficiency Trend Report).

UPDATED: Enhancements to Observation Indicators:

  • Support for rubrics without Descriptions – provides a more compact view for situations where a description is unnecessary.
  • Ability to specify one option in a multiple-choice type indicator – provides a quick checkbox for simple ‘observed/not observed’ behavior.
  • Ability for template creators to specify required indicators that must be completed before finalizing the observation. Required items may remain unspecified while in the In Progress and In Review statuses.

NEW! Observation Reference Document – Attaches an optional reference document to the observation template, allowing Observers to access the file when performing the observation. Possible uses include additional instructions to the Observer or as a template file to be completed and uploaded as evidence on the observation.

NEW! Ability to Attach Files as Observation PD – Allows Observers to assign files during an observation for the Observee to review or complete.

Content Updates

NEW! Project-Based Learning Level 1 – Project-based learning is a broad educational approach that can seem complex and difficult to implement. But by understanding the basics of PBL, teachers can build project lesson plans where they feel comfortable, then progress to more advanced PBL.

Addressed Defects

Edivate Recommends card now properly handles ‘Watch the Video’ links.

Known Issues

Only Observers will be able to see observations on the Observe Mobile App. If you’ve been granted share rights (for example, to look at an In Review observation), you will not see the observation on the mobile app – you will need to use Edivate on the web to review the shared observation.

Currently, the new Results by Item Report does not support the printing of Open-Ended Items. We plan to address this in a future release.

The Denali release of Edivate provides many important updates focused around improving the user experience with Micro-Credentials and Observe. This release also provides the first step towards supporting a two-tier pricing model that allows users of the base price tier the ability to understand what additional content they would have access to via a Premium content subscription.

  • UPDATED: Edivate Library Searching – general improvements to searching, including the ability to search by supported standards (e.g. TEKS).
  • UPDATED: Access to Edivate Review Available for All Users – Edivate Review functionality is now available to all Edivate users. Review videos are added to Edivate via the Review tab within any Group.
  • UPDATED: Access Online Help From Edivate Main Header – makes it easier for users to access online help.
  • NEW! Observe Template Draft Mode – allows observation template creators to create explicit revisions to templates, laying the groundwork for more flexible reporting options in the future.
  • NEW! Ability to Delete Completed Observations – allows observers to remove any unofficial or unwanted observations.
  • NEW! Email Notification When Observe-Assigned PD is Completed – keeps observers in-the-know on the status of assigned PD.
  • UPDATED: Auto-populate End Date and Time on Observations – makes it quicker and easier to complete an observation.
  • UPDATED: Observation Status Report – updated to include basic information for in-progress observations for which the person running the report has permissions to view. This is a change from the previous behavior of the report only showing in-progress observation information for observations performed by the person running the report. This allows for better district- or school-wide reporting of the status of in-progress observations.
  • UPDATED: Notification of Deprecated Micro-Credentials – For accounts that have access to MCs that have been deprecated, a message now appears informing them that access to the MCs will expire on July 1, 2017.

This change was made to allow Edivate Review uploads while the underlying issue causing the problem with thumbnails is resolved. (Released February 9 in silent update)

Ms. Jennifer Farish, a Pre-K teacher at East Elementary in St. George, Utah, uses the “Three Billy Goats Gruff” fairytale to introduce her students to engineering concepts. The students explore bridges and the work of engineers in their reading time, math practice, art, and constructive play.

Feel the Heat: Investigating Convection
In Mr. Nathan Johnson’s high school physics class, students are beginning a unit on heat transfer. They engage in a range of demonstrations and activities to explore the process of convection.

Informational Writing About Tornadoes
At Neil Armstrong Academy in West Valley City, Utah, students in Ms. Denise Rogers’ 1st grade class have been studying different kinds of weather. In this segment, the students will listen to a book about tornadoes and then complete a graphic organizer with three facts they have learned.

Systems of Equations: A Hands-On Experience
At Dixie Middle School in St. George, Utah, Ms. Kris Cunningham’s algebra students use pegboards to learn about different types of systems of equations.

Reinforcing STEM Subjects in FACS
In Ms. Shelli Barnum’s Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) class, students learn real-life skills like interpreting the chemical makeup of ingredients on food labels and adding fractions to sew a buttonhole. These hands-on activities reinforce principles the students learn in their science and math classes.

Probability and Punnett Squares
In Ms. Tracy Anderson’s 10th grade math class, students are learning about probability. Ms. Anderson incorporates a cross-curricular activity using Punnett squares that connects with the heredity unit in the students’ biology class.

STEM Professional Development for Pre-K: Videos 1-5
This five-part series highlights how STEM can be implemented at a pre-kindergarten and kindergarten level. Ms. Britney Nelson, from Washington Country School District in St. George, Utah, facilitates a training session that culminates in an implementable STEM lesson plan.

Hermit Crab Habitats – Part 1
At Neil Armstrong Academy in West Valley City, Utah, Ms. Kacie O’Maley’s 3rd grade students take part in a three-day STEM project of researching, designing, and creating hermit crab habitats.

Finding Fossils
As a culminating activity for the fossil unit, students in Dave Pendleton’s 4th grade class at Neil Armstrong Academy are excavating their own fossils. They examine and measure their fossils, write down their observations, and hypothesize about their origins.

In Ms. Jacqui Moncrief’s pre-K class at Heritage Elementary in St. George, Utah, students have been learning about engineering and the letter “B.” To reinforce the letter “B,” students learn about building through a picture book version of The Three Little Pigs.

Whale Insulation Investigation
STEM education encourages students to explore the world around them. In a unit on oceans, students in Ms. Rachel Sorensen’s kindergarten class work in stations to learn about whale insulation and body parts.

In these two segments, students engage in an engineering design challenge: each group will design an ablative shield that can withstand the heat of a blowtorch for three minutes so that a raw egg placed behind the shield isn’t scorched or cooked.

As part of a unit about the water cycle, Ms. Shea Wickelson’s chemistry students visit Utah’s Great Salt Lake, measuring the salinity of water samples from different areas of the lake with homemade hydrometers.

Exploring Force and Acceleration
In Mr. Matthew T. Smith’s physics class, students have been studying the relationship between mass, force, and acceleration. In this lesson, students will explore the relationship between force and acceleration using accelerometers and low-friction cars.

They work with variables such as data, minutes, mileage, and the total price of the car.
